Early-morning fire destroys Liverpool house

Special to the Journal/East Liverpool Police Department Flames were visible early Thursday morning as they shot from a vacant Lisbon Street house in East Liverpool, where firefighters found the structure fully involved when they arrived. The house is located in between barricades that have that section of Lisbon Street closed to traffic.

EAST LIVERPOOL — Firefighters responded early Thursday morning to a fire at 711 Lisbon St., where a vacant house was found fully involved.

According to fire officials, the alarm was raised at 3:24 a.m. for a structure fire, with a third alarm sounded five minutes later when the three men on duty found the two-story home fully engulfed in flames upon arrival.

The house, owned by Randy Davis, 1642 Holiday St., is located in the section of Lisbon Street currently blocked to traffic due to deterioration of the roadway, and assistant Chief Eric Croxall said firefighters were not certain at first on which section of the street the house was located and then learned it was between the barriers.

“That kind of hampered us a little,” Croxall said, adding that firefighters found they could more easily access the house from Ninth Street, saying, “We walked down a path to get there.”

He also called for mutual aid from Liverpool Township Volunteer Fire Department, which sent tankers and manpower which Croxall said were “much appreciated.”

Although not inhabited, the house did have electric service connected, and the power company was called to disconnect it. Croxall said it was uncertain whether gas service was still connected, but the gas company was called nonetheless.

The house, which was not insured, was a total loss, and Croxall said due to the extent of the damages, the cause of the blaze will most likely not ever be determined.

Firefighters were on the scene until 6:12 a.m.
