Chester cafe robbed

CHESTER, W.Va. — A man who reportedly robbed a local cafe early Monday morning remains wanted by city police.

Police were called around 1:56 a.m. to Mary’s Cafe, 529 Carolina Ave., following reports of a man who held up the business in attempt to get cash.

According to police, an employee at the cafe reported a man entered the business and portrayed he had a gun and demanded money. The employee said after she gave him the money, the suspect shoved her into the restroom and fled the scene.

The employee told police once she was shoved in the bathroom, she locked herself in and waited until she heard the man leave before calling 911.

The perpetrator is described as a white male, standing approximately 5-foot-8. He was wearing a black ski mask, a black and white coat and gloves.

Police Chief Todd Murray said an undetermined amount of cash was taken from the cafe, with no injuries reported.

“We’ve got some leads and so we’re just still going through the evidence of things we’ve obtained in attempts to try to narrow our search,” Murray said.

Along with Chester officers, Hancock County sheriff’s deputies also were at the scene to provide assistance. Police are continuing to gather surveillance video from the cafe and nearby businesses.
