Salem police seek clues in robbery try at Kendrick’s store

Special to the Journal/Salem Police Department Salem police released still photos taken from surveillance video of the attempted robbery suspect from Kendrick’s Corner Carryout last Saturday afternoon and the vehicle the suspect was driving.

SALEM — City police want the public’s help in finding the suspect who attempted to rob Kendrick’s Corner Carryout on Saturday afternoon and the second generation gray Ford Escape he was driving.

Detective Dave Talbert estimated the year from 2008 to 2012 and said the driver side rear wheel was missing a wheel cover or was a spare. The suspect was described as a white male with a thin build standing 5 feet 8 inches tall to 5 feet 11 inches tall. The suspect was covered up from head to toe with his face covered and was wearing gloves. The vehicle was pulled up to the north side of the building.

Still photos taken from surveillance video were released with the hope of helping the investigation. The incident occurred at the store at 981 N. Ellsworth Ave., when the male requested money and made threats to harm the employees before fleeing without getting any money.

Anyone with information should call the police department or Talbert at 330-337-7811. Talbert said callers can request to be anonymous. He also asked that people be careful about making suspicions about a suspect public, particularly on social media.

Talbert said the suspect did not brandish any weapons but told the people in the store that he didn’t want to hurt anyone but reached toward the back waistband of his pants. Nobody saw any weapons. The people in the store included the clerk at the register, another clerk inside and a customer.

When he asked for the money, the clerk initially thought it was a prank or a joke. After realizing it was not a joke, she refused to give him anything and he grew impatient and left.

“We would prefer that people cooperate when faced with this type of situation. We would much rather be investigating a robbery rather than a violent crime,” Talbert said, adding people should be vigilant in their observations while complying because it helps with the investigation.

He said they should note the description of the suspect and any getaway vehicle, know the direction of travel and any mannerisms.

Talbert said the clerk did a good job with providing a description of the suspect, waiting until he went outside and then going out and looking at the vehicle and which way the vehicle went. The vehicle fled west on 10th Street.

The incident remains under investigation.
