Lisbon’s winningest football coach recognized

The Jim Tsilimos Memorial Rock has been placed outside the entrance to War Memorial Stadium in Lisbon. Tsilimos set the record earlier this season for most career wins by a Lisbon football coach in a come-from-behind win over Mineral Ridge. This gave him 143 wins over 25 seasons, surpassing the 142 wins for Bud Bucher, who has his own memorial stone.

LISBON — Lisbon David Anderson High School football coach Jim Tsilimos was recently honored as the winningest coach in school history with a memorial, as were the volunteers who made the memorial possible.

Officials announced at last week’s school board meeting that a “Jim Tsilimos Memorial Rock” was placed outside the entrance to War Memorial Stadium during a surprise ceremony hosted by the board and administration prior to the board meeting. Tsilimos set the record earlier this season for most career wins by a Lisbon football coach in a come-from-behind win over Mineral Ridge. This gave him 143 wins over 25 seasons, surpassing the 142 wins for Bud Bucher, who has his own memorial stone.

The memorial’s plaque is blank as to Tsilimos’ career record since he is continuing to coach and will be added once he retires.

The board also organized a ceremony that was held at halftime of Friday’s home game against East Palestine to recognize the volunteers who raised $3,910 of the estimated $4,000 cost of the memorial rock, either financially or through donated services and labor.

The volunteers were Dana Blackburn, Barb Reed, Robin Houlette, the Lisbon Touchdown Club, Dave Rose, Doug Minor and John Wilms.

“It took a lot good people to help” make this happen, said Superintendent Joseph Siefke.

In other business at the board meeting:

— The following supplemental coaching contracts were awarded: Quinn Puskar, assistant boys basketball; Doug Andric, eighth grade boys basketball; Ryan Snyder, assistant girls basketball; Sara Boyd, eighth grade girls basketball; and Kenadee Pezzano, seventh grade girls basketball.

— The following volunteer coaching contracts were awarded: Caroline McDermott, varsity swimming coach; and Ron Rogers, assistant varsity boys basketball.

— The contract for athletic training services for the winter sports season with George Summers of Lisbon was renewed.

— The contract for roof maintenance was renewed with Roth Brothers Roofing of Youngstown at a cost of $4,049 for the junior/senior high school and $1,420 for the elementary school.

The student spotlight at the meeting was on the Student Senate members from McKinley Elementary School. Third and fourth grade classes elect two representatives who must maintain honor-roll level grades to remain on the Student Senate.

The members who attended the meeting said this year’s projects include holding a week-long series of events focusing on kindness, donating water for used by the local fire department, and raising funds for Akron Children’s Hospital Coins for Kids program. Each Friday, the Senate members collect recyclable materials, and they are also considering volunteering at the county dog pound.
