ELO to close off street today
EAST LIVERPOOL — All but local traffic is being rerouted around a section of Lisbon Street beginning today, with the street closed between Ninth Street and West Eighth Street due to safety concerns with underlying drainage pipes, according to Service-Safety Director Brian Allen.
Allen had told city council’s street committee Tuesday he anticipated the road closure due to holes opening up in that area from what he believes was the use of inferior galvanized pipes when the road was built many years ago.
After speaking with the Ohio Department of Transportation, Allen came away with little hope that the state agency will fund repairs, even though Lisbon Street is actually state Route 267.
He said, however, these repairs will be costly and extensive, more than the city can financially handle.
Allen said Wednesday that ODOT had already installed detour signs in anticipation of the closing, routing traffic away from state Route 267/Lisbon Street onto state Route 11.
He said sewer cameras will be used to inspect the lines, and an estimate for the repairs will be prepared for ODOT’s review with hope that funding will be available.
