East Palestine woman hurt by falling tree
EAST PALESTINE — Among multiple calls Sunday for trees and wires downed by high winds and rain was one in which a woman was struck in the head by a falling tree at 458 East Taggart St.
According to fire Chief Josh Brown, the department responded at 3:01 p.m. for a tree down with injuries and found a large tree on the ground in the back yard and a woman who had been struck. She was treated and then transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown.
Citing HIPAA laws regarding first responders, Brown declined to name the victim.
Lightning struck the Centenary Methodist Church at the corner of East Main and South Market streets, causing minor damage to the bell tower.
South Market Street was blocked by large trees across the roadway near the Wheathill Trailer Park, and at 189 Wood Street, a tree fell into a house, causing two holes in the roof and moderate structural damage but no injuries. The house is insured, Brown reported.
Trees and wires were reported down on East Taggart, South Walnut, Leake, French, Alice, East Main, South Market, West Martin and Wood streets.
Ohio Edison was called to restore electricity and repair damage caused to electric service.
The fire department responded with 19 firefighters and EMS personnel and eight vehicles, assisted by the police and street departments, returning to quarters at 6:30.
