United super search down to 2

HANOVERTON — The United Local school board’s superintendent search is nearing an end.

The board on Wednesday conducted interviews of the final two candidates to replace Steve Viscounte when he retires this summer: current United High School Principal Bill Young and Columbiana High School Principal Lance Hostetler.

The board will now evaluate the two candidates and make a final decision. There is no timetable for naming a new superintendent, but board President Mike Ellyson said earlier this month a decision should be made by early next month.

The board narrowed the candidates from six interviewed earlier this month.

Young has been with United since 1999, first serving as assistant elementary principal and assistant high school principal for two years each, then his current position the past 14 years. He started his educational career in 1992, serving as band director in the Brown Local and Beaver Local school districts before coming to United.

Young is a 1992 graduate of Youngstown State University and has since completed his graduate degree and doctorate coursework in educational administration at YSU, as well as completed the Superintendency Cohort Program at Ashland University.

Hostetler has been principal at Columbiana High School since 2012. He was previously an intervention specialist and head football coach at Edgewood High School in Ashtabula for 10 years after serving as an intervention specialist and work study coordinator at Washington Massillon High School and Glen Oak High School, respectively, since 1995.

Hostetler earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Kent State University in 1993 and his master’s in education/educational leadership from Edinboro University in 2011. He completed his superintendent’s licensure requirements at Edinboro University in December 2015.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 15 in the high school library.
