Railroad crossings on West Pershing and West Wilson in Salem are expected to remain closed today, but Allen Road reopened Wednesday night. The closings are part of a rail replacement project by Norfolk Southern. City Service/Safety Director Ken Kenst said he has remained in close contact with a representative of RoadSafe, which serves as the traffic control company for the railroad, for updates on the work. As he receives new information, he shares what he knows with media outlets so the public knows what to expect. He was originally told that all the crossings in the city were going to be closed Tuesday, but that didn’t happen. He was told New Garden Avenue will be next on the list, but he doesn’t know for sure when the crossing will close.
