Boaters to experience delays on the Ohio this weekend

PITTSBURGH – Local recreational boaters are being alerted by the Pittsburgh District of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to expect long delays on the Ohio River in some areas this weekend due to the closure of the primary lock chamber at Dashields Locks and Dam on the upper portion of the river.

The 110-foot by 600-foot primary lock chamber was closed Aug. 11 to begin scheduled maintenance which will continue until 11 p.m. Sept. 19, with all navigation traffic re-routed to the 56-foot by 360-foot auxiliary lock chamber.

The primary lock chamber at Montgomery Locks and Dam downstream will also be closed beginning at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 18 until 11 p.m. Sept. 5.

Recreational boaters are discouraged from locking through Dashields and Montgomery locks and dams during the lock chamber closure.

Boaters will experience extremely long delays since priority will be given to commercial passenger vessels and commercial tows.
