ELCH officials: We are not going anywhere

EAST LIVERPOOL – Although “considerable changes” have been made at East Liverpool City Hospital, the facility is “here to stay” and is not closing, according to hospital officials.

In a release Wednesday, officers dispelled questions and concerns they said have been left in the wake of a recent announcement about discontinuing and consolidation of some services.

“Although recent economic times have forced us to make considerable changes as to how we operate, East Liverpool Hospital is not closing,” officials emphasized.

They reiterated that a decision was made to expand capacity by consolidating the medical-surgical fifth floor with the fourth floor that will make 57 beds available when the average patient population is 37.

The release also noted that, while obstetrics patients will be transferred to other facilities to deliver their babies after Aug. 31, if time does not allow for such a transfer, the baby will be delivered in the emergency room at ELCH.

Patients with gynecological surgeries requiring admission will be admitted to the fourth floor, where they will receive the same care from dedicated staff as in the past, according to hospital officials.

After the Aug. 31 date when the pediatrics unit is set to close, pediatric patients will still be seen in the emergency room but if admission is necessary, the child’s primary care physician and family will determine where the child will be admitted or transferred.

The following will remain operational: Emergency, surgery center, medical imaging, cardiac rehab services, cardiac diagnostic testing, nursing units, intensive care, coronary unit, medical surgical, sports medicine, behavioral health for seniors, drug and alcohol medical stabilization, wound care, medical education, laboratory testing, therapy and rehabilitation.
