Blaze hits home being renovated

WELLSVILLE – The fire marshal has been called to investigate an early morning fire Tuesday that destroyed a garage and left one firefighter slightly injured.

The village fire department responded at 12:44 a.m. to 1809 Chester Ave., to property owned by Anna Mae McPeak, which is currently unoccupied but reportedly being renovated by East Liverpool resident Brownwen Wooley, according to fire officials.

The garage was fully involved when 12 firefighters arrived on the scene, and firefighter Barry Podwel said, “There was nothing left of it” by the time they cleared at 2:30 a.m.

The structure had no vehicles inside and was not insured.

Podwel said the fire marshal was called due to neither the garage nor house having electric service connected to them, which was determined when AEP Ohio arrived to disconnect the meter and found no power.

Firefighter Nick DeSarro sustained a minor burn to his leg and was treated at the scene.
