Two people seriously hurt in Route 11 crash

WEST POINT – Two people were flown from the scene of an accident Monday night on state Route 11 just south of the West Point exit.

The crash, which occurred shortly after 9 p.m., forced the closure of the northbound lanes of Route 11 at the state Route 7/267 intersection to enable the two helicopters to land. The lanes reopened at 10:30 p.m.

According to patrol trooper Brian Kavanagh, a Mercury SUV was southbound through a construction area on Route 11 in which only the left lane was open.

The vehicle went off the left side of the road, into the media and rolled over. Two people were ejected, Kavanagh said. They were later flown to St. Elizabeth’s in Youngstown.

The southbound lane was blocked for about 90 minutes due to debris in the lane.

The two were not wearing seat belts, Kavanagh said.

A third occupant, a man, was not injured. His mother picked him up at the scene.

The car was totaled and towed back to the patrol for further investigation.

West Point firefighters and North Star Ambulance also responded to the scene.
