The Morning Journal staff collected eight awards, four by staff photographer Patti Schaeffer, Sunday in the annual Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper competition.

Those included two first place awards for Schaeffer, one for Best Feature Photo, “On the Fence,” and one for Best Sports Photo, “Bronc Flying.”

Schaeffer, a Journal staffer for 16 years, was runner-up for Best Photographer, and received another second place award for Best Breaking News Photo, “Saving the Day.”

Journal Editor Dorma J. Tolson earned a second place award for Best Editorial Writer.

Journal News Editor Ryan Gillis received a second place award for the Best Full Page Layout, “Big Rig.”

Another second place award, in the Best Breaking News Coverage category, went to staff writer Jo Ann Bobby-Gilbert for “Storm Wreaks Havoc.”

Sports Editor Ron Firth and Assistant Sports Editor Michael Burich were honored with third place as Best Daily Sports Section.

Sixty-four daily newspapers submitted 2,599 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2013.

The Journal competed in Division II for newspapers with a daily circulation of 8,000 to 12,999. Division II was judged by editors from the Cadillac (Michigan) News and The (St. Joseph, Michigan) Herald-Palladium.
