Chesapeake breaks drilling permit drought

LISBON – For the first time in months a permit for a new drilling site in Columbiana County has been issued, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The permit is for the D & B Kibler unit off U.S. Route 30 in Hanover Township, which was issued on March 26. The applicant is Chesapeake Exploration.

This brings to 78 the number of permitted drilling sites in the county since the oil and shale gas boom got underway in mid 2010. Of the 78 drilling sites, 64 are permitted by Chesapeake.

The following is a list of drilling sites by township: Butler, 5; Center, 7; Elkrun, 7; Fairfield, 6; Franklin, 9; Hanover, 14; Knox, 4; Madison, 2; Middleton, 6; Salem, 6; Unity, 3; Washington, 4; Wayne, 1; West, 2; and Yellow Creek, 2.

There are approximately 101 wells in various stages of production at these 78 drilling sites, 21 of which are producing. Columbiana County ranks third in the state in horizontal wells, behind Carroll and Harrison counties.
