Liverpool Township firefighter recognized for heroism

LaCROFT – Quick action by a Liverpool Township fire captain last year resulted in the state fire marshal’s office honoring him this week with an Award for Heroism.

Former captain and current firefighter Jason Bahen, was presented the award Monday afternoon by his uncle, Mike Bahen, who was fire chief when the younger Bahen saved not only his father’s life but possibly the lives of others.

Mike Bahen is now a Liverpool Township trustee.

En route to a possible structure fire April 6 of last year, Jason Bahen was in a fire truck being driven by his father, Paul, also a township firefighter. They were approaching a steep hill on a windy road lined with homes when he noticed his father had failed to down shift the truck as he reached the crest of the hill.

Traveling 55 miles per hour, the truck was nearing a large curve leading toward a cliff when Jason realized his father was unresponsive and grabbed the steering wheel, steering the truck safely around the bend.

As Paul slipped in and out of consciousness, Jason again took the wheel as they headed toward three on-coming vehicles and was able to maneuver around them and bring the truck to a halt at the divider of a busy highway, it was noted in the award.

There, he was able to call for an ambulance to transport his father to the hospital, where it was determined he had suffered a stroke.

“Jason not only saved his father that day but also the occupants in the vehicles and homes along the way,” the award stated.

“Jason Bahen is a credit to himself, his family and the Liverpool Township Fire Department and the state of Ohio,” it concluded.

As with most heroes, Jason said he doesn’t think of himself as such.

“It hasn’t hit me yet, but I think anyone would have done what I did,” he said modestly in accepting the award.

Jason is also a firefighter for the village of Wellsville. In addition to his father being a LTFD firefighter, his brother, Jeremy is a full-time fireman at Brookfield Fire Department and also a volunteer for LTFD.
