Chamber may have to go it alone
LISBON -Village Council declined to help fund a chamber of commerce summer kickoff festival being planned by the organization, at least for now.
While council agreed last week to let the Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce use the park at the Sadie Van Fossan pool complex for the June 7 event, it later decided against acting on the request for financial assistance pending further information.
Parks manager Dana Blackburn, who is working with the chamber on the event, said the organization wanted council to fund half the $3,000 cost of having Froggy Radio broadcast live from the park for four hours.
Council seemed reluctant to do so, noting the chamber receives a portion of the village’s hotel/motel tax, with the chamber’s share last year totaling $23,000. Councilwoman Cheryl Mills also pointed out the latest monthly check the chamber received from the village was for $2,200
“I don’t mean to be stingy …” she said.
Blackburn said the chamber currently has a $14,600 balance in its tourism fund, which is where the hotel/motel tax money is deposited.
Councilman Tom Darcy said he heard from chamber members the event was not a sure thing, and Blackburn indicated the chamber was waiting to hear back from council before deciding whether to go forward. The budget for the event is between $5,000 and $10,000.
Council President Roger Gallo was displeased that they were expected to take immediate action even though this was the first he heard of the request. “It’s not that I’m against it, but I’m against a making a decision on a meeting night,” he said.
Council members indicated they would reconsider the request if a chamber representative would attend their April meeting to provide more details.
