Journal staff stakes claim to eight AP awards

COLUMBUS – Morning Journal staffers have been announced as finalists for awards in eight categories in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ 2013 newspaper contest.

The Morning Journal competes in Division II for newspapers with daily circulation of 8,000 to 12,999.

Journal finalists and the category of their awards are: Editor Dorma J. Tolson, Best Editorial Writer; Photographer Patti Schaeffer, Best Photographer, Best Breaking News Photo, Best Feature Photo and Best Sports Photo; Journal Staff Writer JoAnn Bobby-Gilbert, Best Breaking News Coverage; Sports Editor Ron Firth and Assistant Sports Editor Michael Burich, Best Daily Sports Section; and News Editor Ryan Gillis, Best Full Page Layout.

The awards in actual order of finish – first, second and third places – will be announced at the Ohio APME annual awards banquet May 18 in Columbus. The General Excellence and First Amendment winners also will be announced at the meeting.

Sixty-four daily newspapers submitted 2,599 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2013.

Division II entries were judged by editors from the Cadillac (Mich.) News and The (St. Joseph, Mich.) Herald-Palladium.
