Driver killed, children injured in one-car accident

LISBON – The Lisbon Post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal one-car accident which occurred on state Route 164 Saturday afternoon.

According to Trooper Kevin Thompson, Pamela Yeager, 42, Carrollton, was driving north on state Route 164 at about 2:30 p.m. when she lost control of her Chevrolet HHR, drove off the right side of the road and into a field, before crashing into a ditch.

Yeager was unresponsive when troopers arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene by an investigator with the county coroner’s office.

Three children were also in the vehicle. One 13-year-old girl was taken to Salem hospital while another 13-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy were flown to Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. Their names and conditions are unknown at this time.

Thompson, who is handling the investigation, could not speculate on the initial cause of death until toxicology reports are released, but did not expect alcohol to play a factor in the crash.

“We’re not really sure if it was a medical condition she may have suffered,” Thompson said. “We did not detect any alcohol when we arrived. Once we receive toxicology reports, we’ll have more to work with, but it is under investigation.”

Thompson said Yeager was not wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred, but the children were.

“She did not appear to be belted when we arrived,” Thompson said. “The children were wearing seatbelts though.”

Leetonia fire fighters battled for nearly two hours to remove Yeager from the vehicle because of the extensive damage to the front end.

“We had gotten here at around 2:45 p.m. and they had started to get her out,” Thompson said. “They were finally able to get her out by 4:30.”

Leetonia firefighter Ron Hall Sr. summed up the difficulty had working to free Yeager from the vehicle. “We have had so much trouble with this,” Hall said. “This is probably the worst that I have seen.”

Columbiana EMS and KLG Ambulance also assisted at the scene, and Rankin’s Towing removed the vehicle afterwards.
