Extension project begins next week

WELLSVILLE – A project to extend Buckeye Water District service to Duke Road in Calcutta is slated to begin next week.

Work will commence on Monday according to Gene McGaffick, head of the district engineering committee, at the BWD Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday morning. Office manager Gregg Stanley said the work is expected to disrupt traffic on state Route 170, which is where the new water main will tap into as it runs down Duke Road to the Shady Run Mobile Home Park.

District Manager Al DeAngelis reported that a 400-foot section of water line has been replaced on Church Street Extension in Salineville. DeAngelis says the existing line, which turned out to be an old one-inch steel well casing, had developed numerous leaks requiring repairs over the last six months. Since the line only serves two occupied structures presently, a replacement one-inch line was deemed to be sufficient.

Board member Cal Carney seemed incredulous that a one-inch line had been enough to serve the two homes, plus an empty building that had at one time been the town jail, in the first place. “We had three or more customers on a one-inch line?” Carney said.

“Well, not us,” DeAngelis said, reminding Carney that BWD has been utilizing the existing infrastructure it inherited when it began supplying water to Salineville. Carney agreed, decrying the “liability” that Salineville has been for BWD since it took over water service in the village.

DeAngelis stated the line was in such poor condition that workers found previous, low-quality repairs – including one made with a bit of rubber held around the pipe with a hose clamp – when it was fully excavated.

Rick Williams from the district Insurance Committee spoke for board member Jack Call, who heads the committee and was absent. Williams mentioned a meeting that had been held Wednesday with a representative from Paychex, the payroll and human resources management firm that handles the district’s employee payroll and was contracted by BWD to investigate its options regarding employee benefits. Another meeting is planned for Oct. 28 to make a final decision before the end of the month.

In other business:

– Williams reported that Cintas document destruction services will be at the office on Oct. 31 to shred old documents containing sensitive customer information. Approximately 110 boxes of paperwork will be shredded at a cost of $6.50 per box. “It’s a secure, verified destruction,” said Stanley.
