Tree falls, logger seriously injured

SALEM -A man was seriously injured in a Tuesday afternoon logging accident off Yates Road in Salem Township.

Township Constable Dan Valentine identified the injured person as 37-year-old Ron Mullet, who was flown by helicopter to the St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman.

Mullett was working for an Amish logging outfit from West Farmington in Trumbull County, according to Winona Fire Chief George Brantingham. They were logging in a wooded area off 4640 Yates Road when the accident occurred about 1:30 p.m.

Valentine said Mullett was cutting up a felled tree when another employee using heavy equipment pushed over a tree that was 18 to 20 feet high. The tree fell across Mullet’s back, knocking him over and pinning him to the ground before it was removed.

The Leetonia EMS responded to the scene, as did the Winona Fire Department to set up a landing zone for the helicopter.

Neither Valentine nor Brantingham were aware of Mullet’s condition. “When we got there he was conscious and breathing but in excruciating pain,” Valentine said.
