LISBON – A Guilford Lake woman experienced every pet owner’s nightmare last week when her dog was stolen from her car.

Kathy Smith said her 2-year-old bichon/maltese mix, Sugar Bear, was taken from her vehicle while she was at the Lisbon post office on Wednesday.

“This was the first time I never locked my car,” Smith said Sunday. “There was only one other car in the lot. … I just ran in for stamps. It was going to be just in and out.”

When Smith returned, Sugar Bear was gone. Her sibling “was in the back curled up, like she was afraid,” Smith said. “I just lost it.”

Smith reported the theft to police plus the county humane society.

“Sadly, a dog like this may have re-sale value,” Jenny Pike, president of the humane society, wrote in an email. “The thought of the motive makes me ill.”

Smith is offering a $100 reward for the safe return of her pet, and a man from Youngstown reportedly offered to match that with his own $100.

“The posters my daughter made up says the reward is for an arrest, but I don’t care if he is arrested,” Smith said. “I just want my baby back.”

“I’m worried about her mother and sister,” Smith added. “They are not eating like they should. They are just walking around, looking for her …”

Smith hopes other keep looking, too. She can be reached at 330/222-7048 or 330/260-5034.
