Tip leads to suspect’s capture in Beloit
BELOIT- Goshen police apprehended a murder suspect in Beloit Thursday night hours after the man fled a Jefferson County home where he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the head.
Michael E. Mitchell, 38, 998 County Road 50, Irondale, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. Thursday at a Derr Avenue home believed to be owned by his relatives. He had been wanted on a murder warrant through Jefferson County after allegedly shooting to death his girlfriend, Marie A. Cantwell, early Thursday morning at the home they shared with her three daughters. The three girls, ranging in age from 10 to 14 years old, were home when the shooting took place, but were unharmed.
According to Goshen Police Chief Steve McDaniel, he and Officer Matthew Beck responded to the Derr Avenue home with U.S. Marshals from the Youngstown and Jefferson County areas after receiving a tip from Jefferson County. McDaniel said they set up surveillance and discovered the vehicle in which Mitchell reportedly fled the crime scene.
Mitchell surrendered without incident, McDaniel said, noting that officers confiscated an assortment of automatic weapons and rifles, as well as ammunition. McDaniel said the officers found Mitchell in the garage and that he appeared to be packing up to leave.
U.S. Marshals transported Mitchell back to Jefferson County.
