Three tossed off ballot

LISBON -There will be three fewer candidates and two fewer liquor options on the Nov. 5 election ballot following action taken Friday by the Columbiana County Board of Elections.

The petitions of the following candidates were thrown out due to insufficient signatures:

– Herman C. Frank II, who was running for one of the four Washingtonville council seats up this year. His departure leaves Devon Davis and Allen and Rebecca Vignon.

– Troy R. Kinser, who was running for one of the two Knox Township trustee seats. His departure leaves only Greg Carver and Ben Pidgeon as the remaining candidates.

– Richard C. Macek, who was among nine people running for the two Unity Township trustee seats. The remaining candidates are Tim Bodnar, Charles Foster, Bryan Henderson, Rick Hostetter, Kathy McCarthy, Terry McElroy, Valerie Rockenberger, and Barry Weigle.

Elections Board Director Adam Booth said the general rule is candidates are told to get at least twice any many signatures as they need to qualify. Frank needed 10 signatures, while Kinser and Macek needed 25.

The following liquor options were disqualified for the same reason as the candidates, although significantly more signatures are required for ballot issues. The liquor options tossed from the ballot were Paul’s Restaurant in Columbiana (184 signatures needed) and Arya Business Inc. (156 needed), First Street, Hanoverton.

In other business, Booth announced one person to date has filed as a write-in candidate for one of the fall races: Kevin P. Joy, running for Wayne Township trustee. This brings to three the number of candidates running for the two trustee seats, with the others being Edward Dailey and Jim May.

Aug. 26 is the filing deadline for write-in candidates.

Also, the board officially accepted the candidacy withdrawal letter of Rick Drummond, who was Republican candidate for Salem city council president before later deciding to quit the race because of his job. His withdrawal from the race leaves Democrat Bret Apple as the only candidate.
