Fatal motorcycle crash under investigation
WEST POINT – A 25-year-old man is dead after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into the back of a Mercury Sable on Y&O Road Thursday.
The Lisbon Post of the Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash that happened at 2:45 p.m. in Madison Township.
According to their reports, Justin D. Knapp of County Airport Road, Wellsville was on a 2007 Honda motorcycle driving northwest on Y&O Road when he struck the Mercury Sable driven by Samantha M. Baker, 18, of Y&O Road.
Baker was in the process of making a left turn out of a private drive onto Y&O Road when the motorcycle approached.
Trooper Jodi Bowlen, who is handling the investigation, said excessive speed is not believed to be a factor. The post is still trying to determine if Baker could see Knapp coming as she pulled onto the road, she said.
“We are looking at view obstruction,” she said.
Whether charges will be filed is also not determined at this point, and the matter is being forwarded to the Columbiana County Prosecutor for review, she added.
According to the report, Knapp’s motorcycle went off the right edge of the road after impact, down over an embankment and into a thick clump of trees and weeds.
He was ejected during the crash and died as a result of the injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, Bowlen said.
Baker was not injured, and there were no occupants with either driver, according to the report.
The West Point Fire Department assisted at the scene.
