Leetonia losing its last bank

LEETONIA – The Farmers National Bank branch in the village will be closing in October.

The branch at 16 Walnut St. is one of two- the other is on Youngstown Road in Warren- being closed by the bank on Oct. 1 due to “prudent business practices,” according to bank management.

According to a written release issued by the bank on Friday, declining transaction counts and banking trends driving customers toward online banking, in addition to close proximity to a heavily used branch in Columbiana, have made the Leetonia branch underutilized.

Customer accounts will be transferred to the Columbiana branch 4.5 miles to the east. Account holders will be notified in writing of the change, according to Amber Wallace, senior vice president of marketing.

Branch employees will be reassigned within the company prior to closure.

The realignment is a planned event and there are no anticipated branch closures beyond the current action, the company said.

Wanda Hofmann, the supervisor at the Leetonia branch, was unavailable for comment.
