Shooter damages downtown Salem businesses

SALEM – City police are asking for the public’s help regarding shots fired in downtown Salem early Saturday, damaging the windows of a handful of storefronts and a Jeep, but causing no injuries.

The gunshots were reported at 2:50 a.m., confined mostly to the south side of State Street in the 100 and 200 blocks between Ellsworth and Broadway, with callers saying the bullets came from a moving vehicle described as a white or silver truck or SUV.

Officers found several .22-caliber firearm shell casings in the street.

According to reports, officers found bullet holes in the front window of Ricky’s English Pub, and the windows of Lyle Printing, Game On and Royal Alliance Associates. The driver side rear window of a yellow Jeep Wrangler owned by Todd Meskel had also been shot out.

According to a Facebook posting on the Salem Police Facebook page, he and his girlfriend were minutes away from going to that Jeep when the shots were fired.

There was also a report at 3:07 a.m. from a caller who reported hearing six shots being fired in the 700 block of East Third Street.

No injuries were reported. Officers searched the area, but were unable to locate the vehicle described by callers, with the case under investigation.
