LISBON – A Salem man found innocent by reason of insanity after nearly striking a police officer with his vehicle will be sent to the Kendall House at the Columbiana County Mental Health Center.
Andrew Swetye, 49, was sent to the county jail until a bed becomes available at the Kendall House, where he will be evaluated and eventually released. A status court hearing will be scheduled for six months from now in his case.
Common Pleas Court C. Ashley Pike found Swetye not guilty by reason of insanity on charges of failing to comply with a police order to halt and assault because he is a diagnosed schizophrenic and likely did not know what he was doing was wrong.
According to court records, Swetye fled from Salem police on Jan. 3 and in the process nearly struck a police officer with his motor vehicle.
