Lisbon stays in DTF

LISBON -The village has reaffirmed its commitment to the Columbiana County Drug Task Force.

The Lisbon Police Department has long assigned one of its officers to the DTF on a full-time basis, and a resolution passed by Village Council last week continues that commitment, except this time Columbiana County commissioners are helping pay the cost.

Commissioners announced last month they would begin using some of the proceeds from the state casino tax to begin paying a portion of the salary of those police officers assigned to the DTF. This is being done to encourage new departments to join and help existing members pay for their officers already assigned to the DTF.

Police departments assigning an officer to the DTF 20 hours per week will receive $10,000 per year. Those assigning an officer full-time will get $20,000.

Lisbon has long assigned one of its officers full-time to the DTF and would continue to do so under the resolution adopted by council. This commits Lisbon to assigning the officer to the DTF full-time in exchange for $20,000 from commissioners.

The current Lisbon officer assigned to the DTF, Dan Downard, served as its director until his removal in December after an investigation was launched into possible financial irregularities at the agency. He is currently on paid leave from the Lisbon department.

Chief Mike Abraham said he has yet to decide who he will appoint to the DTF or when.

Council’s next meeting is 6:30 p.m. March 26.
