Fire rips Negley residence

NEGLEY – A man lost his home in a fire Tuesday afternoon that kept firefighters busy most of the day and into the evening.

D. Scott Wallace, his girlfriend Patti Fowler and his dog were able to escape the blaze at 6607 Carbon Hill Road and were not injured, Negley fire captain Beverly Shell said.

The call came into the department at 2:32 p.m., and the New Waterford and East Palestine fire and EMS departments met the Negley crew at the home located at the end of Gorby Lake Road, a small one-lane no outlet road just off Carbon Hill Road.

Although located on Gorby Lake Road, Shell said the home’s address is listed as Carbon Hill Road. She said the one-story wood frame home is insured and that the back side sustained most of the damage in the initial burning.

The Darlington Township Fire Department was also called out for additional manpower and a tanker truck.

“They were doing everything they could,” she said of the firefighters.

The fire was contained quickly, she added, noting that most of the severe damage was on the inside on the home.

Firefighters were called back to the scene a few hours later to battle a rekindle and were still there after 9 p.m.

Shell said earlier in the day the cause of the fire and where it originated is still under investigation.
