SALEM – A man attempting to do a good deed by picking up a stranger on Cunningham Road on a cold night ended up in the emergency room after getting robbed and assaulted.

Salem Police were called to Salem Community Hospital at 12:34 a.m. Friday in reference to an assault and after further investigation, learned it resulted from a robbery in the area of Butcher and Cunningham roads, not far from Walmart.

Lt. Don Beeson said a Lisbon man, whose name wasn’t released on the report, was driving on East Pershing Street Extension on his way to Walmart to cash his paycheck and saw the other man walking on the road.

He was on his way back and the other man was still out walking on Cunningham Road, so he stopped to check on him and was told his vehicle had broken down. He offered him a ride to another location so he could use a phone.

After getting in the vehicle, the other man demanded his money, took his wallet and hit him in the face, fleeing on foot. The victim drove himself to the hospital, bleeding from the nose and mouth area.

The suspect was described in his late teens or early 20s, slender, wearing a hoodie. A lot of footprints were found in the area of Butcher and Cunningham Road.
